Gastrointestinal surgeryor endoscopy has several names, depending on which portion of your digestive tract your doctor is focused on.An endoscopy is used to investigate, diagnose and treat gastrointestinal issues.  An endoscopy is sometimes combined with other procedures, such as an ultrasound.Newer endoscopes use high-definition video to provide clearer images.

Upper endoscopy, also known as esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a procedure that enables the examination of the esophagus, stomach and the upper small bowel called duodenum. An upper endoscopy is a procedure used to visually examine your upper digestive system with a tiny camera on the end of a long, flexible tube.

Endoscopy is used to determine the cause of the gastrointestinal disorders and symptoms including heartburn, the presences of hiatal hernias, the cause of abdominal pain, unexplained anemia, and the cause of swallowing difficulties, upper GI bleeding and the presence of tumors or ulcers.

Colonoscopy is a visual examination of the entire large intestine, also known as the colon. This procedure enables the doctor to see ulcers, inflamed mucous lining of your intestine, abnormal growths and bleeding in your colon, or large bowel. This examination is performed using an endoscope-a flexible fiberoptic tube with a tiny TV camera at the end. The camera is connected to either an eyepiece for direct viewing or a video screen that displays the images on a color TV.

This exam is used to explore possible causes of abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea and other intestinal problems. The endoscope not only allows diagnosis of gastrointestinal (GI) disease but treatment as well. As a colonoscopy is also used as a method of screening for colon cancer.
