One of the many surgical specialties we offer at VIP Surgical Center is the treatment of:

Hand Surgery

If your hand or surrounding area is impaired in any way, surgery may improve your condition. This type of very specialized surgery can treat diseases that cause pain and/or impairs the strength, function or flexibility of your wrist and fingers. Surgery works to restore hand function to near normal, improving the part of the fingers and hands injured by trauma or to correct abnormalities that were as a result of birth. The structure in the hand and surrounding areas are verycomplicated and delicate. The hand is a sophisticatedpart of the human body that is made up of bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, skin, and blood vessels. All of these elements must all be in a perfect symbiotic working relationship for the hand to function healthy and in order to not cause any problems or pain. Many hand specialists also have expertise with problems of the elbow, arm, and shoulder, as many of these issue areas are inter-related to the hand.

An injury or disease can have a very debilitating affect onparts or all of these structures, and can impair the use of the hand, elbow, arm, shoulder on either a temporary or permanent basis.

Hand surgeonsmust have additional specialized training in that is beyond their board-certified specialty training. To become a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, a full year of additional training is required, as is the passage of a rigorous certifying examination.

Some of the more common problems treated by hand surgeryincludes:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Dupuytren’s contracture fasciectomy
  • Fractures of the hand, wrist or forearm
  • Ganglion removal
  • Knuckle (MCP joint) replacement
  • Sports injuries of the hand or wrist
  • Tendon Repair
  • Tennis elbow
  • Trapeziectomy (removal of the trapezium)
  • Trigger finger Release
  • Wrist pain

Other problems treated can include arthritis, nerve/tendon injuries, and congenital limb differences from birth defects.

Not all problems treated by a hand specialist initially need surgery. Physicians often recommend non-surgical treatments, as the first line of treatment, such as medication, splints, therapy, or injections prior to a surgical procedure. However, this may not always relieve the pain or solve the problem, therefore hand surgery is often performed to address the problem and provide a better solution to the patient.
