Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Minimally invasive spine surgery, also known as MISS, is any minimally invasive procedure that targets conditions specifically within the spine through the use of small incisions during surgery as opposed to traditional open-spine surgery which typically requires a 5-6 inch incision. This technique usesstate-of-the-art technology, advanced imaging techniques and special medical equipment to reduce tissue trauma, bleeding, radiation exposure, hospital stays and recovery by minimizing the size of the incision. It also makes spine surgery possible for patients who were previously considered too high-risk for traditional surgery due to previous medical history or the complexity of the condition.

In general, the goal of minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) surgery is to stabilize the vertebral bones and spinal joints and/or relieve pressure being applied to the spinal nerves, which have often resulted from conditions such as a spinal instability, bone spurs, herniated discs, scoliosis or spinal tumors.

As opposed to open spine surgery, minimally invasive spine surgery approaches can be faster, safer and require much less recovery time. Because of the reduced trauma to the muscles and soft tissues, compared to more traditional procedures, the potential benefits of MISS can include:

  • Better cosmetic results;
  • Less blood loss;
  • Reduced risk of muscle damage;
  • Reduced risk of infection;
  • Reduced postoperative pain;
  • Faster recovery;
  • Less rehabilitation and;
  • Reduced reliance on pain medications

MISS can be used to treat a number of spinal conditions such as:

  • Deformity
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Disc Herniation
  • Fractures
  • Instability
  • Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
  • Spinal Deformities Such as Scoliosis
  • Spinal Decompression
  • Spinal Tumors
  • Vertebral Compression Fractures
