Podiatry is the treatment of the feet, ankles and lower extremities (structures of the leg). The foot is a complicated part of the body’s framework, consisting of 26 bones, 33 joints and numerous tendons, ligaments and muscles. Many conditions affecting the foot can produce discomfort. Since most people are on our feet for a number of hours each day, if our foot’s strength or health is compromised, then we are often limited in our mobility. Sometimes the structure and mechanics of our feet and/or ankles change over time and for any number of reasons, this can make surgery essential to address these changes.
Podiatrist are skilled and training to perform reconstructive and microsurgeries surgeries, set fractures and treat sports-related injuries, prescribe and fit orthotics, insoles, casts and prosthetics, order and perform physical therapy and take and interpret X-rays, ultrasound, MRI’s and other imaging studies
Foot surgery is usually only considered when all conservative approaches to dealing with foot problems have been exhausted, such as physical therapy and/or corrective devices. Surgery is typically performed to reduce pain, improve or correct deformity or to restore/increase the function of the foot. Your podiatrist can determine if and when surgical intervention may be necessary. The following are common types of podiatry surgeries offered at VIP Surgical Center:
- Fusions (To treat arthritic conditions of the foot and ankle)
- Hammer Toe Repair
- Heel Spurs Removal
- Neuroma Excision
